Hepatitis B carries a high burden in sub-Saharan Africa, where an estimated 60 million people are chronically infected. Entecavir is an alternative for patients with renal impairment or those unable to tolerate tenofovir. Lamivudine remains in use in lower-resource settings due to cost, though resistance rates are higher. Ribavirin has an established role in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection management in immunocompromised patients and is also used in combination regimens for certain viral haemorrhagic fevers.
