Antiviral Medicine Supply for Hospitals & International Buyers

Antiviral medicines span a wide range of viral families and clinical indications, including herpesviruses, influenza, hepatitis B and C, respiratory viruses and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Euro Biom works with hospital pharmacies, infectious disease units, hepatology departments and international wholesale buyers to source and export antiviral medicines reliably from the UK, including via named patient supply where specific products are unavailable in the destination market.

Herpesvirus Antivirals: Aciclovir, Valaciclovir and CMV Agents

Herpesvirus antivirals are among the most commonly requested products in our antiviral range. Aciclovir is available in multiple formulations: oral tablets and suspension, intravenous infusion for severe HSV and VZV infections, topical cream for cold sores, and eye ointment for herpetic keratitis. Valaciclovir and famciclovir are the preferred oral agents for recurrent herpes simplex and herpes zoster due to their improved bioavailability over aciclovir.

For cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections in transplant recipients and immunocompromised patients, ganciclovir IV and oral valganciclovir are the standard treatments. Foscarnet is used for CMV strains resistant to ganciclovir and is a specialist product that can be difficult to source in GCC and African markets. Euro Biom can supply foscarnet and ganciclovir as part of urgent or planned procurement programmes.

Influenza antivirals are critical for both seasonal management and pandemic preparedness. Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) remains the most widely used neuraminidase inhibitor and is stockpiled by health authorities in GCC countries and across Africa. Zanamivir (inhaled) is used where oral administration is not possible, and baloxavir marboxil represents a newer cap-dependent endonuclease inhibitor active against influenza A and B. Euro Biom can supply influenza antivirals for institutional buyers, government health ministries and pharmacies preparing for outbreak scenarios.

Hepatitis B carries a high burden in sub-Saharan Africa, where an estimated 60 million people are chronically infected. First-line oral antiviral treatments include tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), both of which are preferred for their high barrier to resistance. Entecavir is an alternative for patients with renal impairment or those unable to tolerate tenofovir. Lamivudine remains in use in lower-resource settings due to cost, though resistance rates are higher. Euro Biom can supply all four agents in the strengths and pack sizes appropriate for international programmes.

Hepatitis C treatment has been transformed by direct-acting antiviral (DAA) regimens achieving cure rates above 95 percent. Key DAA combinations include sofosbuvir/ledipasvir (Harvoni), sofosbuvir/velpatasvir (Epclusa), glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (Maviret) and daclatasvir used alongside sofosbuvir. Access to DAAs remains a significant challenge across much of Africa due to cost and supply chain fragmentation. Euro Biom can supply both branded originator DAAs and quality-assured generic equivalents for international hepatitis C treatment programmes, supporting buyers that need verified UK-sourced or UK-licensed products.

Remdesivir, an antiviral ribonucleoside analogue, is used in hospital settings for the management of COVID-19 in adults requiring supplemental oxygen, and remains relevant in GCC and African hospitals managing immunocompromised patients or those with severe respiratory illness. Ribavirin has an established role in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection management in immunocompromised patients and is also used in combination regimens for certain viral haemorrhagic fevers. Both are specialist products that Euro Biom can source under its WDA licence.

Immunocompromised patients, including transplant recipients and those receiving chemotherapy, are also at risk from opportunistic fungal infections. Although technically in the antifungal category, azole agents such as fluconazole, voriconazole, itraconazole and posaconazole are closely associated with antiviral management pathways and frequently requested alongside antiviral products. Euro Biom supplies azole antifungals as part of a broader infectious disease sourcing capability.

GCC hospitals and African healthcare buyers face distinct antiviral supply challenges. IV aciclovir shortages have periodically affected UK and European markets, making reliable export supply critical for transplant units and neurology wards managing herpes encephalitis. CMV agents, hepatitis C DAAs and specialist products such as foscarnet are not always locally available in destination markets. Euro Biom holds WDA authorisation, operates GDP-compliant cold chain logistics and can arrange named patient supply for unlicensed or specialist antiviral medicines. Urgent orders and planned quarterly supply contracts are both accommodated.
